about

We sometimes view songs that invoke the Divine as limiting. Like taking a jar of the Atlantic Ocean home and saying "I've got the ocean right here!".
🦋
Yet when we universalize big, lofty concepts like Love, or Justice, or the Divine, we run the risk of using empty platitudes that have no bearing on reality. "Meet me at The Ocean. Which one? Doesn't matter it's all the ocean." So your friend meets you in LA while you're back in Jersey.
🦋
This song is 1 part protest song and 1 part hymn. The verses protest against the temptation to universalize our daily experience into a non-reality as a way to escape our responsibility to engage with the messy parts of life. E.g. Pandemic, racial injustice, political corruption.
🦋
But the chorus is a hymn and acknowledgment that the engine of the universe IS bigger than the mess we experience; and that through the mess we become refined and prepared for the "milk and honey" we've been promised. Sometimes when our own language fails to speak to our experience, more ancient language is required. I've needed it now more than ever.

lyrics

Growing up I always thought the goal was milk and honey
but you fed me in the desert with a word
I claimed it filled me up as long as my quail eggs were runny
but fasting from the status quo, it struck me as absurd

I pray to calm the spirit of the storm
but I forget to walk on water

Holy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come
Worthy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come

Searching for the truth that I once saw in Your face
while I'm gripping with white knuckles to preponderance of grace
what does it look like when the infinite is clothed in time and space

my bumper sticker love won't save my neighbor
if I forget to move the mountain, that causes him to labor

Holy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come
Worthy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come

Our lives are just one long drawn out confession
of the things that we believe even if we don't profess them
so if your Promised Land's deferred it might be G-d, not a digression
maybe Love isn't a password, but the way that freedom dwells among us

Holy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come

Hallelujah

Holy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come
Worthy is the Lamb
who was and is and is to come

I pray to calm the spirit of the storm
but I forget to walk on water
